Interview with a Gardener - Mr Studsor
I share my knowledge and thoughts, but I thought it might be fun to hear from other gardeners! This will be something that every now and then I will throw in every now and then to get some fresh ideas and some helpful tips for everyone.
So, here it is, an interview with a gardener, part 1.
What is your favourite thing to grow?
I love growing ficus plants 🪴. They are hardy, grow fast and evergreen.
What do you find most rewarding things to grow?
Ficus as mentioned above, but also philodendrons and monstera.
What first inspired you to get into gardening?
My nan gave me two giant birds nest ferns when I got my first rental at age 18. I slowly built my collection from there.
What is one tip you'd like to give to a fellow Green thumb?
Start with something hardy, such as a ZZ plant. It can be off-putting when your first plant dies. So start with the basics.
What is the most useful tool or accessory that you have?
Seasol. Every plant loves it and you can never overdose or do too frequently. I do it once a fortnight but you can do it weekly or monthly, your plants will love it.
How do you decide what to grow?
I take into account location. You need to choose the location for the plant before you select the plant itself.
Can you tell us a bit about your garden?
Most of my plants are shade loving foliage plants. But I have a few succulents and some fruit trees too.
Tell us a bit about you?
You'll find me at garden centres or bunnings quite a bit.
What do you find is your most useful resource ?
The seasol. And always a good quality potting mix. Stay away from the cheap stuff.
How do you control your weeds?
Mulch in the garden beds and chickens permitted to eat grass along the fence lines.
How do you start your seeds?
I soak them in water for 24 hours and then place them in seed raising mix. I keep them in the shade and slowly move them to filtered light, depending on species.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Don't plant ficus plants into the ground. They'll rip up your plumbing, your neighbours and your neighbours neighbours!
What is your all time favourite plant?
My Wollemi Pine
Having been to this beautiful place so many times, this garden has come a long way and undertaken a massive transformation! Its owner has put in so much effort and love, and continues to plod along.
The indoor plant, oh my gosh, so healthy, lush and amazing, and is complete with chickies.
