Biochar
What is Biochar?
Biochar is a "charcoal-like sunstanc3 that's made by burning organic matter feom agricultural and forest wastes in a controlled process called pyrolysis." - Regeneration International
"It is a stable, carbon-rich form of charcoal that can be applied to the soil for improvement". - Department of Agriculture and Food
Pyrolysis is essentially the thermal decomposition of biomass in the absence of oxygen.
Although, in the grand scheme of things it is a fairly new 'product', it appears to have massive benefits and go a small way to patching up our planet.
Some of its benefits include:
. Assisting with storing carbon in the soil, this helps with emissions not entering back into our atmosphere.
. Increasing mycorrhizal and fungal activity, which assists nutrient uptake by plants.
. Retaining water and nutrients.
. Aids with plant health.
. Assists in combating global climate change.
. Improves water quality.
Because the carbon in biochar resists degradation it is and can be stored in the soil for hundreds to thousands of years!
Where can we find this stuff?
Through your local agricultural and farming outlets, such as Elders, Mitre 10 etc. You can buy it online, though numerous countries, and Binnings sell Seasol Biochar with zeolite.
It's about time we start giving something back to our planet, don't you think.
