Interview With A Gardener - Cindy

Welcome back to an interview with a gardener, today we had a chat with Cindy to find out all about her garden, and what she's currently growing.

In her early 50's, Cindy has a lovely garden, situated on roughly 800m2, where she has created a small oasis, with over 25 fruit trees (not including vines and bushes) scattered between her chicken coop/orchard, through-out her garden and even growing as a hedge out the front. She has everything from citrus, traditional stone fruits, apples, pears, plums, to an ice cream bean tree, dragon fruit and more.

After building her chicken coop/ orchard area, she moved on to building herself a veggie patch, and boy can she supply the neighbourhood with that!

With that, lets dive in!

Veggies.

What do you find the most rewarding thing to grow?
Pumpkins.

What first inspired you to get into gardening?
A teacher at primary school.

What is one tip you'd like to give to a fellow green thumb?
Weed manually, use as few chemicals as possible.

Helpful hint, Cindy rarely ever uses just one type of fertiliser, she usually buys a selection, of both synthetic and organic, and combines them. Her favourites include:
. Richgro veggie

She also uses chicken poop and straw from her coop to mulch her garden!

A trowel.

How do you decide what to grow?
I have general things that we like to eat, then I try find a heritage variety.

Can you tell us a bit about your garden?
I've made sweeping beds to try and have something always in flower to attract bees for my fruit and veggies.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
I'm quiet and enjoy the peace and tranquility my garden gives me and the company of my chickens.

What do you find is your most useful resource?
Wasps, they keep the caterpillars at bay.

How do you control your weeds?
I manually weed, pulling out at the roots.

How do you start your seeds?
I've been trying different ways, finding planting straight into where they are going to grow, best.

Anything else you would like to share?
Nature's bugs are your best pest control.

What is your all time favourite plant?
Laburnum, bearded iris and hellebores.

What is your most hated pest, and how do you control/ deal with it?
Cutworms, I hunt for them, then feed them to my chickens.

If you could have your dream plant, what would you have?
Bramley apple.

What are you growing at the moment?
Garlic, onion, broccoli, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower, silverbeet, beetroot, celery, plus lots more!

Cindy's (my mums) gardens through-out the years, have always been my inspiration, and what has driven me towards my own passion in gardening. Seeing, and being part of her creations, no matter the size garden she was presented with, she always manages to create a master piece, and an ecosystem for the next person to carry on.
