Happy World Soil Day!

Happy World Soil Day everyone!

World soil day is a day that quite literally celebrates soil. It was designed to educate communities about its importance and contribution to life as we know it, whether through agriculture, food, climate regulation, biodiversity or any of the many more roles soil plays.

"The nation that destroys its soil, destroys itself" - Franklin D. Roosevelt

"To forget how to tend soils is to forget ourselves" - Mahatma Gandhi

What is soil? Soil is defined by the Oxford dictionary as being the upper layer of earth in which plants grow, a black or dark brown material typically consisting of a mixture of organic remains, clay and rock particles.

But soil is so much more and extremely important, without it we would be a tad stuffed. It acts as a carbon storage facility, and store more carbon than forests and the air combined,  acts as a water filter, provides a lot of our antibiotics for fighting disease, can be used as building material, not to mention the biodiversity it supports!

"You can't have a healthy civilization without healthy soil." - Joel Salatin

Did you know, a healthy soil, full of diversity and organisms will smell sweet and earthy.

Keep our soils healthy everyone, think about what we are adding, think about what we are leaving behind. Think about our future.
