Attracting Native Bees - Part 2
Now we've touched briefly on plants, but here's seven tips to assist these hard workers further.
1. Avoid pesticides.
Pesticides are designed to kill, well, pests, however they also knock off all your beneficial bugs and pollinators. There are plenty of more natural alternatives, or, if you have a well balanced garden, you should have plenty of natural predators for different pests.
2. Plant in clusters, rather than singles.
This provides more food, and the bees are more likely to frequent them because of this, single plants mean potentially minimal food.
3. Plant local.
Local native plants are more likely the food source your native bees are used to, and therefore, looking for.
4. Plant different colours and shapes.
As we discussed before, all bees are different, therefore we need a variety of coloured flowers, and a variety of shaped flowers to attract a variety of buzzies.
5. Think sunny.
Bees like sunny spots, so they will look for resources in sunny spots, ergo, we need to plant in bright and sunny places.
6. Water.
Having a clean water source is crucial, it doesn't have to be big, but constant and fresh.
7. Different bloom times.
By planting plants that flower at different times of the year, we can ensure we provide a year-round 'grocery store' for our bees.
It's honestly that easy, put a bit of time in, think about what your planting, and provide resources.
