Give A Little Green For Easter
Easter today is celebrated with oodles of chocolate, in all different shapes, sizes and flavors, ranging from ever so simple to damn right elaborate and over the top.
Jonquils, essentially, a mini daffodil, but so wonderfully fragrant!
Hyacinths, oh my gosh, talk about fragrance! These things know how to capture your attention, stunning colours, so easy to grow and incredible scent, what more could you ask for?!
Tulips. For those of us in Western Australia, you may or may not be familiar with the flower and garden festival in Nannup. Well, if you are, no doubt you have seen tulips! there is pretty much every different colour imaginable here, some are doubled, and there's even some with ruffles or 'fringes'.
They are a touch more difficult to grow though, you need to make sure you get enough chill time, otherwise you may be digging them up each year to put them in your fridge chiller to help them bloom!
The Easter cactus, great for those low maintenance gardeners as they are ridiculously hardy, they have amazing, spidery blooms usually in bright pinks, reds and oranges, although you may be lucky to find a different colour.
Lastly, hydrangeas. I've always been very fascinated with hydrangeas, as they have quite a neat trick... They can change colour! Now, not always, but it has a lot to do with your soil pH, the more acidic your soil is, the more purple to blue they are likely to be, or, more alkaline, and they start going more pink! How neat is that!
But for us green fingered folk what about something else?
You'll see in your local garden center a wonderful selection of spring flowering bulbs at the moment. So spring flowering means autumn planting to flower through winter and into early spring, just so everyone's on the same page. But there is a massive assortment and they can make lovely gifts for our green-fingered friends.
Lets talk options.
Daffodils! You can can rarely go wrong with daffodils! They're bright and cheerful, can be small or large flowering, single and doubled, cream, yellow, orange or any combination in-between. Garden Express usually offer an incredible selection!
