Golden Glow Buddleja

Have you seen this incredible buddleja?

No? Oh dear you must!

A cross between buddlejas davidii and globosa and developed in the early 1900's Buddleja x weyeriana 'Golden glow' is one of the original cultivars of this hybrid!

Your traditional buddleja has long, slender flower spikes, but not this one! Instead you will be graced with the sight of bright, golden yellow, rounded clusters, producing a delightful difference to a cottage garden.

Reaching a height of 1.5 to 2m and width of 1 to 1.5m, this shrub can be a real center piece, especially when in full golden bloom and set against its contrasting long, dark green foliage.

They are quite an adaptable plant, happily taking full sun and a range of soils, from nice rich loam to clay and sandy loams, in the case of mine, its more sand than loam! They also do quite nicely in pot, still blooming beautifully from summer into autumn. They do prefer a free-draining substrate rather than having wet tootsies, and become reasonably waterwise once established. They'll also take both acidic and alkaline soil types.

Have you noticed how the flowers have a beautiful lilac-mauve blush to them? This is a key difference between the Golden Glow and Sungold hybrid, which has no lilac-mauve blushing. Sungold is also almost pure yellow, where as Golden Glow is that beautiful yellow-orange.

Golden Glow can be used in a variety of garden styles and still provide a unique pop of colour. Above, is a more traditional cottage style garden, with salvia, penstemons, lobelia etc. Whilst below is a bit more simple with some nice lomandras. Both look equally stunning and look very different, but the common thing, the Golden Glow looks amazing!

Commonly called the butterfly bush, it is appropriately nicknamed as, you guessed it, the butterflies love it, attracting many from far and wide as well as other beneficial pollinators!

Buddlejas, including the Golden Glow, benefit from a good, hard pruning, they love it, tou can cut up to ⅔ of the plant back to a healthy node. This will keep your glow nice and dense, rather than letting it become sparse and leggy, the way lots of cottage plants can.
